Head: Content Curation Department

The face of content curation in media has changed dramatically. Are you experienced and motivated enough to take on the exciting challenge of heading up the content curation department of an established and ever-growing publishing and media company?

You are first and foremost the chief custodian of the company’s brands, its content curation staff and their readers. You will take control of an exceptionally talented and passionate editorial team across 11 magazines and six websites, motivating and managing them to deliver excellent quality content (words and pics) for use on various media platforms including print, digital and social networks.
You will lead the strategy behind each brand as it reinforces it connection with its communities in traditional and new media as well as other brand extension offerings, such as events.
Your main day-to-day functions will be as follows:

  • Lead the content team and maintain a good team spirit through weekly meetings and daily contact with staff;
  • Liaise with other departments on behalf of the department;
  • Tweak processes and procedures in conjunction with other departments to ensure the smooth running of the brands across all departments, and ensure editorial staff comply with these processes and procedures;
  • Attend and participate in weekly and monthly management meetings;
  • Take responsibility for ensuring quarterly brand strategy meetings takes place in conjunction with other departments; oversee the execution of those plans;
  • Fulfil a full HR function for the department. Ensure the content curation department is suitably staffed, look at career development for staff, write job descriptions for new positions, negotiate contracts, oversee those contracts being drawn up, motivate for increases and promotions, conduct disciplinary procedures, plan and approve leave applications etc;
  • Help to conceptualise and launch new brand extensions;
  • Maintain and create advertising and sponsorship relationships through regular networking with clients;
  • Deal with reader and advertisers queries and complaints as soon as they are brought to your attention;
  • Compile in conjunction with the Publisher, annual editorial budgets
  • Oversee and approve monthly editorial budgets, signing off invoices and ensuring payment for freelance journalists;
  • Give input on marketing initiatives for magazines and the company;
  • Participate in the planning and execution of events related to the magazines;
  • Maintain editorial integrity and help editorial staff do the same
  • Oversee the day-to-day running of the department, with specific focus on
    problem solving any items that arise;
  • Represent the various brands at PR events and functions

 

Requirements

  • A relevant diploma or Bachelors degree
  • Experience in media law
  • Excellent research skills and the ability to identify new trends in content curation
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Sound knowledge of social media and digital content curation trends
  • Experience in managing magazine brands (five years) and creative people
  • Excellent editorial skills with a sound understanding of writing/subbing/editing and content dissemination across various platforms
  • Sound knowledge of the consumer and custom magazine industry
  • Creativity and conceptualisation skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong computer literacy (MS Office)
  • Own vehicle
  • Willingness to travel and work long hours when required
